Ariel Kaplan’s We Regret to Inform You is a compelling novel about every highly motivated college applicant’s worst nightmare. Luckily, she has a support system in her best friend Nate who is a wonderful character with a deep back story. Ariel Kaplans We Regret to Inform You is a knowing, enjoyable tale of a teenager who learns first-hand that college admissions isnt always as fair or merit-based as universities would have us believe-and that a painful, unwarranted rejection can become a gateway to adulthood and self-discovery. Kaplan does an excellent job capturing the anxieties of the college decision, but also deftly addresses the bigger question young adults ultimately face: who am I really? Mischa, like many overachievers, has never had the time to really explore her own self-identity and this crisis brings that fact to the forefront quickly. This mystery/dramedy/romance kept me turning the pages all day long and I finished it in a day. Soon she, her best friend/possible love interest, Nate, and a group of techie hacker girls are digging deep into school records to solve the mystery. At first she gives in to despair, but once she starts investigating her applications, some weird inconsistencies begin to emerge. She thinks she is Ivy-league bound until she gets rejected from all the schools she applied to…including her safety school. What did you like about the book?
